MISNOMER

A wrong or inaccurate name or designation.

A name that is incorrectly or unsuitably applied.


EXAMPLES:

  • WHITE CHOCOLATE (It’s not made by chocolate)

  • BUFFALO WINGS (Buffaloes don’t have wings & the wings are from a chicken)

  • STAR FISH (Aren’t fishes)

  • FRENCH FRIES (Are originated in Belgium)

  • GUINEA PIGS (Are not pigs or from Guinea)


OXYMORON

A figure of speech contradicts itself with opposing meanings within a word, phrase or sentence.


EXAMPLES:

  • AWFULLY GOOD

  • BITTERSWEET

  • ORIGINAL COPY

  • WORKING VACATION

  • CIVIL WAR

  • OLD NEWS

  • SILENT SCREAM

  • CLEARLY MISUNDERSTOOD

  • CRASH LANDING

  • NEGATIVE GROWTH
